Website Transfer Guide
Moving Your Website, Domain, or Email to WebFootprint
We’re here to make moving your website and emails as easy and seamless as possible. This guide outlines what you’ll need to know, what to prepare, and what to expect during the transfer process.
What You Need to Provide
1. Domain Access
To transfer your domain, we’ll need one of the following:
- Login details for the account where your domain is registered
- or a domain transfer code (also called an EPP or auth code)
You’ll also need to approve the transfer in an email your domain provider will send you.
2. Website Hosting Access
To move your website, please provide:
- Login details for your current hosting account (such as cPanel, Plesk, FTP, or SSH)
- If your site uses a CMS like WordPress, admin login credentials help speed things up
3. Email Information (if transferring email)
If you’d like us to transfer your email accounts, please send:
- A list of email addresses you’d like to move
- Access to the current mail server (if possible)
- Whether you’d like to move old emails or just set up new inboxes
- Who needs help setting up their email on phones or computers (we can assist)
What to Expect
Domain Transfer
Quick and simple. Once you approve the email confirmation, the domain will move over without downtime. You won’t be charged again until your normal renewal date.
Website Transfer
This depends on your current host:
- From Xneelo: Takes 1–2 hours
- From other providers: Can take 4–8 hours, depending on access and site size
- Large sites (over 15GB): May take longer or need extra steps
Email Transfer
This is often the most detailed part of the process. You have a few options:
- Set up new email accounts: Quick and clean. No emails transferred.
- Server-to-server transfer: Moves old emails if server access allows it.
- Manual migration: We help users one by one via remote session, creating new inboxes and moving emails manually.
Email transfers take longer because each mailbox must be safely backed up, moved, and tested. We’ll coordinate this carefully to minimise any disruption.
Timelines & Downtime
We aim for minimal downtime. Domains and websites can often be moved in a few hours. Email transfers may take longer, depending on how they’re done. We’ll schedule everything with you and keep you updated at each step.
Final Thoughts
Transferring your digital presence doesn’t need to be stressful. Once you’ve sent us the details we need, we’ll take care of the rest—making sure your site and emails are moved securely and smoothly.
If you’re ready to begin, send us your access details or get in touch if you have any questions.
