Read Aloud · Chrome extension

Any page, read aloud in a natural voice

A Chrome extension that reads a selection or a whole page aloud with OpenAI text-to-speech, in the onyx voice used by the WebFootprint quote platform.

Illustration: listening to an article with Read Aloud

The brief

We wanted to listen to long pages instead of reading them, in the same voice our quote presentations use.

What we did

  • A popup to read the selection or the whole page, with pause, stop and speed from 0.5x to 2x
  • Right-click menu items and keyboard shortcuts (Alt+Shift+R to read, Alt+Shift+S to stop)
  • An offscreen audio player that splits text into chunks of about 600 characters and prepares three ahead, so audio starts quickly
  • A settings page for the API key, voice and model, with a test sample

The result

A light extension with no build step. Speed changes apply mid-read, because playback speed is set in the browser.
