Whistle Racer · Toy brand game

Past project

A whistle-powered racing game for a toy brand

A browser racing game for Whistle Racer, a range of toy cars that go faster the harder you blow. Players click when the whistle icon glows to launch and boost, and swap cars to get past each obstacle.

The brief

The game took the toy online. Codes on the back of the box unlocked a second series of cars, and national and global leaderboards with Facebook sharing gave buyers a reason to keep playing.

What we did

  • Side-scrolling racing game drawn on an HTML5 canvas with CreateJS
  • Timing mechanic: click as the whistle icon glows blue to launch and boost
  • 16 cars in two series, with box codes to unlock Series 2
  • Nine household and outdoor levels, from the kitchen to the garden, with obstacles that need the right car
  • Upgrades, national and global leaderboards, guest or Facebook login and score sharing

The result

The game ran on its own domain, whistleracergame.com, which the Internet Archive captured in August 2018 and July 2019. A copy is still hosted at whistleracer.webfootprint.co.za, and the first stage still plays in a current browser.
